love your home. I owned a gambrel Colonial years ago when I lived in Guilford, CT and it was one of those homes that just looked "right". I had built a studio/darkroom above the garage area with a 4 foot by 3 foot skylight and it was a great place for portraits.
My current studio/puppy room is in what used to be the formal living room and it's almost big enough to do multiple dogs and families. Having a dedicated space is really the key thing because it allows you to do little things like lens tests, puppy pics and lighting experiments without having to drag equipment out of storage. I love it.
Plus, folks who come to visit the puppies see my work on the walls and ask for portrait sittings. That's really cool!
