Thanks for letting us play with this file. I am really trying to learn to improve my PP skills, and this kind of thing helps.
I believe what you notice as "negatively affecting the perceived sharpeness" happens when you make adjustments that cause the histogram for that color to extend past the left or right edge. This is "blowing out that color", and you lose detail. I cannot seem to avoid over saturating with the Sat slider, so I use curves instead. I know we should watch the histogram for each color after every move, but I usually struggle to remember...
Others on this forum are much more adept at this than me and could provide better insight, but I believe that is what you saw.
