Julie,
yup, you can open jpegs in ACR and it does give you additional latitude in terms of processing. Which is nice if you end up shooting lots of action stuff because the buffer in jpeg mode is much larger than in RAW mode. You're still stuck with the image processor in your camera for color saturation and contrast/sharpening unless you can set it for zero in your custom functions.
