The other solution for this problem is in post processing. HDR is one way to go and it can be done with the Paint Shop Pro program. Personally, I use the Nikon program Capture NX2 which using control point technology to locally control color, brightness and contrast. I have taken the liberty of working a little on the image you posted to give you an idea of what can be done in PP. I am including two images that have been manipulated in NX2. The first is a fairly subtle version while the second one is more juiced up for more drama. These same effects could also be done in PaintShop Pro.

Thanks Geo, those look really great! I did look through the link for HDR given above, and read up in my camera manual about doing bracketed exposures, which seems to me you'd need a subject that was pretty static?

So what you've done here, is the editing done manually by section? Can you tell me what feature(s) in PSP would be used? I am familiar with for example, how to select an area of sky and change lightness, contrast, color, etc, and change overall contrast and sharpness. Is that really what you're doing or something else? I don't have a "burn/dodge" tool in PSP, I think my version must be too old. Another reason to break down and buy photoshop.
