This is a curly one for me always. I just can't get my head around photographing an animal in misery for the sake of it. For sure zoo shots can be beautiful (like yours here: and the crop version is great). Some zoos have their place and some of the work done to maintain endangered species is awesome - if photography or filming is honestly to support this (education rather than fund-raising) I'm all for it. Only I can't cope with a shot of an animal in confinement just for the sake of the shot. What I see first is the depression and misery in the eyes and body language - or the resentment.
I know my viewpoint is out of step with most photographers, and I have probably lost friends because of it. But I really choke on camera clubs organising a "trip to the zoo" when there are so many other equally challenging subjects available.
