I'm not sure how well this translates on the web, but it makes a pretty dramatic print.

Your opinions, please.

Hi Durwood,

Thank you very much for sharing. Right now, I really don't know what to think about this shot. Part of me really likes it, part of me has trouble with it - but here is the hard part, I am not sure why. I know that this is not very satisfying as an answer - but I am having a hard time with explaining it.

I just wanted to bump the message. I am eager to hear what others say about it while I think about it for a bit.

James

Durwood,

I really like the patterns, grain lines and composition a lot. I also like the depth provided by the lighter section in the upper right.

Since this is the critique forum, my thoughts are as follows:

1. I think that if you cropped off the bottom portion ( about an inch on my monitor) of the shot to the bottom of the rounded knot, it would put more emphasis on what I like about the shot - the two sets of curves. The bottom section is distracting to me.

2. I think this kind of shot really requires that the detail be present in both the highlights and shadows. On my monitor you have lost detail on the highlights towards the top left, and in several of the shadows. This might not be a problem with your shot, but rather with my monitor, or possible due to degradation that occurs on the web.

Thanks so much for posting. I hope my 2 cents worth are helpful.

Dave

Hi Rick,
I can only image how lovely this wood looks on toned fiber based paper. I too was slightly troubled by the design. So I took liberty to show an alternative. What do you think?

I think the detail loss in the shadows are the result of post processing. The original does have blown highlights on the left hand side. I like the cropping and rotation suggestions. I will revisit the project and incorporate these ideas. I will also post the original color shot soon for your own interpretations.

THANKS

That's a very nice take. I like your crop the best of all.

I think that I would rather maintain a tiny bit more of the contrasty tonal range, but not as strong as my original toned pic.
Good job!
