Peggy Sue,
I'd be remiss if I didn't share some of the shots I actually took on Saturday. Sometimes you get lucky. It seems the harder I work, the luckier I get.

Here's a moving shot of the Toy Poodle that I shot previously on the Florida Circuit but could never quite get that pretty moving shot. Her owner is very nice and loves what I've gotten to date but I wanted a nice moving shot of her. I like this one.

And I like this one.

And I love this self-stacked shot.

It was raining pretty hard when I shot these and I was squeezing as much as I could out of ISO 800.

Then we moved to the Rottie ring to shoot a young boy that had just finished a week ago and was showing in Breed. He is owned by a lovely lady who owned one of our Annie daughters from her first litter. The boy won Best of Breed primarily because he's a nice mover. Here's one shot I like a lot.

And another showing his overall balance and structural integrity.

So I guess overall I got what I went to get. I'm still working on the Mastiff shots. That is a boy (280 lbs of him) that really doesn't want to show and it certainly is obvious in his body language. What a shame! I've always believed that if they don't enjoy showing, leave them home. Oh well . . .

Enjoy,

Jim

John,
keep in mind that show photography is a very specific niche in the whole "pet photography" category and knowing the breeds and how they should be set up is a necessary component to what I do in the show ring.

But taking great pet portraits is more about rapport with the animals and knowing good composition and you already have that piece in your arsenal. There are very few show photographers because, frankly, it's a hard business to get into politically and it's hard to do if you are not -- or have not been -- an exhibitor/handler.

Thanks Jim

I also have no desire to become a show photographer but have an interest in learning the trade. Thanks for all the explanations.

I have been practicing my pet portraits and have my first assignment later this week.

Pet photography is a whole nother can of worms. You really have to know what the client is looking for.

With wildlife, you wait and it will eventually come(if you are lucky) You just have to be patient and aware. With pets, you must be in control, direct, be patient, not get rattled, not let the people rattle you. You have to know how to get the cute expression, and shoot fast!

I have been involved in many different aspects of photography since my youth, long ago gave up my youth. I did studio work in the 70's, then photojournalism in the 80's with some sports photography mixed in. Ventured into scientific photography in the late 80's and then into wildlife in the 90's until today.

I think I can handle the "shoot fast" and I am very good with animals. The other things I may be lacking I hope to learn quickly.

Thanks for all the advice.
