Hey Marty,

Nice shots. I have never seen a mountain goat in the flesh before. After 10 years of traveling to Yellowstone, oddly enough, I only saw my first Ram this March. Aren't they amazing the way they are able to run on seemingly nothing???

Nice shots.

I believe the goats have a suction cup like membrane on the hoofs. In getting close-ups like those, the height they are on the cliff is obscured- if they are out again today, I will work on that in my framing/ field of view. The series were tken with Caon 20D, 100-400 L, and some with Tamron Pro series 2x converter. I just got the Tamron 1.4 and 2x converters, and I either need to practice with them or they suck on the 100-400. I definitly need tips on using these. Hopefuly I will get to try them on some other lenses today.
Merry Christmas!

Hi Marty,

How do you like the 2x converter with the 100-400 IS? How do you find the AF works with it? Have you compared the 2x converter with the Canon one?

I have been VERY happy with the Canon converter. My biggest gripe is that the Canon converter causes you to lose AF.

Cheers!

No auto focus either Tamron 1.4 or 2 x on 100-400, I didn't really like either one.Manual focus takes some luck let me tell you how many shots did not make it........ I have read that a less expensive Tamron 1.4 will auto focus, I am trying it and will post pics - I still don't justify price of Canon TC; - if they are as fuzzy as these at all better to get 600 mm later ........I am so far not impressed with the TC's on these L lenses, but I am not exactly that experienced with them yet.

Was the photo of the goats courting censored? It is not showing on either my computers. I thought it an interesting spectacle-buy the way they were just chasing each other around I don't think he ever got her..........
Happy New Year

Hey Marty,

I never saw these images. As for the price differential between the TCs - not sure. I do know that I found the Canon 1.4 to be of higher quality than the Sigma that I had. Specifically, images were sharper at F4 and f5.6 with my 70-200L.

Look real real close, about dead center......2 goats headed DOWN........
They were out again, but a little higher up today- This is how they looked through 70-200 2.8 L w/IS- puts thier height as well as the distance covered by the 100-400 2x in perspective. I returned the 1.4, as I found the cheaper version is maintaining auto focus, I'll have it later this week. Focus from a mile away is an education.

These were about 3/4 mile uphill of my driveway- shot w/100-400 and the Tamron 2x again, at dusk, manual focus. Soft corners, but there wouldn't be a picture without the 2x I don't think.

And a last look at an incredible face,,,,, from almost a mile away, zoomed in CS2.........

Have a great New Year- some great photos are out there lets go get them!

Those are some excellent shots!
I have to say that I can't recall ever seeing a group like this in all the times I've been up in the canyons!
Perhaps I'm just not looking intently enough...

Very nice photos, Marty.

I counted 19 goats in the same spot yesterday afternoon. I also saw a single billie a little east of there, as well as six singles and doubles above the P&R lot to the north.

I took a few shots, but they were hand-held and my lens lacks IS, so they weren't that good.

I'm interested in your experience with teleconverters. I've got a Canon 75-300 I'd like to stretch a little. I would definitely not be able to photograph these goats without AF.
