Well, today is my birthday (don't ask which one ) and early this morning, I was asked to visit our local Animal Control facility to check on a young Rottie male that had reached the end of the adoption period. For those of you that don't know what that means, most Animal Control facilities keep large, potentially dangerous dogs for only two weeks to allow owners to claim them or to find new adopters. After that, they are euthanized.

So I arrived on AC's doorstep as they unlocked the doors and made my way back into the cage area to check out the Rottie. He was in a cage with another young Rottie male and they were getting along famously although the other Rottie had a splint on his left leg. I asked to take the first Rottie boy outside to evaluate him and judged him to be about a year old. He is very active and pretty friendly with both other dogs and people but clearly has had little experience with people and no training whatsoever. When he came over to me, I knelt and gave him a milkbone and he promptly rolled over on his back and gave me his belly. At that moment, I named him Johnny and made the decision to take him into our Rescue organization.

I filled out the paperwork and asked about the other Rottie boy with the splinted leg. They told me he was also at the end of his adoption period and nobody had in a claim for him. So I went back and took him out for an evaluation. I judged him to be between 6 and 8 months old. He has no training and very little experience with people but he is not afraid and is very sweet both with food and when being handled. I named him Frankie and decided we would take him into Rescue as well.

Our Rescue organization -- the Gulfstream Guardian Angels Rottweiler Rescue -- is a no-kill shelter that finds new forever homes for abandoned Rottweilers. Dogs coming out of Animal Control cannot be placed in veterinary kennel facilities because the vets are afraid that those dogs will be carrying something very contagious (like Kennel Cough). So they have to be placed into foster homes until we can find new families to adopt them.

On my way back home to process the photos I took of Frankie and Johnny, I called several potential foster families and was able to find one that would take them both. So, both of these puppies will be given a chance for a great life with a loving family. I personally can't think of a better Birthday Present than this.

Since this is a photo forum, here are some photos of the boys. First, here's Frankie.

And here's Johnny.

And, while I was taking these photos, I was being carefully watched by the director of Wildlife Relations, Mr. Goose. I took his picture, too. I'm not sure he was all that impressed .

Thanks for reading about my day.

Jim

You brought a tear to both eyes, thanks for saving these beautiful dogs. I would love to volunteer to help these gentle big dogs; does your rescue organization need a pet portrait photographer. I know you can do that also but I also know your plate is pretty full. I would love to help. I have a mobile studio or could do environmental shots.

John,
thanks for both the reaction to the story and the offer. I'll see what we need most. GGARR (the Rescue Organization) operates out of Miami but I am a Director and get involved in most of the dogs that come up in the Central Florida area which extends over to Tampa and to Jacksonville.

I might ask you to do some home checks if we get applicants from the Tampa area. I know you would be as tough as I am about making sure the home was right to adopt any dog and, especially, a Rottie.

You have to meet some of my guys! Once you understand how basically sweet and intelligent this breed is, I think you'll understand why we work so hard to place them in the right types of homes.

As for the photography piece, we definitely could use a good photographer but the President of the organization -- Grace Acosta -- thinks she is one . And I'm not going to insult her by suggesting that she isn't .

But thanks for the offer and don't be surprised if I do ask for your help in a non-photographic context.

I love what you are doing. Thank you! As the economy is getting worse, more animals are showing up in shelters. It takes true caring to do something that will help in such a positive way.

Thanks for the reply, I am willing to help anyway I can; I have a few friends who have had Rotties so I am very familiar with the breed, a gentle beast.

I agree not to step on toes of your President, maybe I can do some photos for my own use as well as help the organization with other duties.

Peggysue,
caring is easy. Doing is hard. You can only "do" if you have the resources -- homes, fosters, vets, websites, etc. For me, the hardest thing to do is go to Animal Control and not look at the other dogs or touch them. If I did, I would fall in love with every single one of them. And I can't.

So, I focus on the ones we can help. The Rotties. I touch them. I let them react to me. I let them know somebody loves them. And they tell me all about themselves.

Today, I saved two dogs from a certain death. I've done something good. I wish I could do that every day.

Jim, I totally agree with all you have said here. We all need to reach the part of our hearts that does not hurt in order to help. I have found many ways in order to help and yet it never feels enough. I am so happy you got to feel the real meaning on your birthday. The best.

And that goose - what a great expression!

Jim,
With the help that you are doing for Rotties, I would like to send you a tote bag with Rotties on it for fundraising, that is if you would like me to do so. I am including a photo of items that I take to dog shows. I had some made for the Rottie national next month. I understand all rescue groups need help and if I can help in this small way, hopefully that would be good.
Let me know.

Jim, first of all Happy Belated Birthday!
What a wonderful story about the two boys, because of you they now have a second chance at life. I want to thank you for giving them that chance.
I've done Rottie rescue and know the terrific feeling when you finally find them a forever home.

Connie

That is a wonderful thing you did Jim. I don't believe in the government controlling what is done with pets, but, I sure wish there was a way to get rid of the "bad" breeders who let their dogs go to crappy homes(or any home with the $$)

I honestly just wish I had some magical answer. It is so sad to think of those 2 sweet dogs in a shelter
