I know we have seen some inside shots of studios. I hope to straighten my up enough to shoot it. But since my garden is just beginning to pop with color, I thought I would show the outside. In 1995, after renting studio space, I decided to add on to my home. It had a three car garage with a side load. You can see we added a four car, (it is deep) with a studio above for woodworking and my photo studio is the old garage. We are adjacent to 300 acres of forest preserve and my horses are in the back yard. It has proved to be a super arrangement.

love your home. I owned a gambrel Colonial years ago when I lived in Guilford, CT and it was one of those homes that just looked "right". I had built a studio/darkroom above the garage area with a 4 foot by 3 foot skylight and it was a great place for portraits.

My current studio/puppy room is in what used to be the formal living room and it's almost big enough to do multiple dogs and families. Having a dedicated space is really the key thing because it allows you to do little things like lens tests, puppy pics and lighting experiments without having to drag equipment out of storage. I love it.

Plus, folks who come to visit the puppies see my work on the walls and ask for portrait sittings. That's really cool!

I'll have to clean up my office when I get a chance and put some pics up.

When we moved in, we agreed that I get free reign over the finished basement and Tammy gets the rest of the house.
My office is roughly 12x12 with one corner clipped a little by an angled wall. I also have about a 24x15 space that I could use for a studio, but I'm still figuring out the local ordinances and such for that.

Then there is my home theater in another area of the basement.

Two things. First, Peggy, beautiful home. Thank you for sharing. Second, Jim, Guilford Connecticut????? A big jump from Sunny Florida. I have been using Guilford as a half way stop between Manhattan and Rhode Island for nearly my entire life.

Let me ask you all, have you had any issues with your home being where the business is physically located? I am always anxious about having a problem with the house becoming somone else's home after some potential legal issue (i.e. they stub their toe on my newly sanded floors and I lose my house for having attempted to stab them).

as for the second question, no we've had no issues with using the home as a business location. In fact, most people prefer it. We happen to live in a very nice neighborhood and I think it's far more relaxing to people to come here rather than a strip mall in a questionable part of town or our downtown location where we had the ad agency.

Guilford is one of my favorite towns. I built there in 1978 and lived there until I changed jobs to a Greenwich ad agency in 1983. I was originally born in Norwich, CT and we had a cottage at Mattunick Beach in RI. Where in RI do you go?

People actually liked coming to my home. I hated having to get it company clean every time I had a session. Though, it was not a BAD thing

PeggySue, your house is beautiful. It looks like the ideal arrangement. You can do environmental and studio in the same location. I would love that. I want to eventually build and do something similar
