After my forth trip in a month's time, the eagles were feeding. And I was missing them til then- persistence paid off! There were about 40 photographers, but these guys were so into feeding they seemed to ignore us. These are from within about 50- 40 yards mostly ? 500mm Cannon f4 on 20D.
They were more spread out this year for the most part, we had a warm spell open up a lot of fishing ground for them, and they were not as concentrated as we see them. They will be mostly gone in a week. I have another set from yesterday that I like more, but I havn't processed them yet, I was printing these. And last week, I have a set on some ice, real telephoto work, not as close. But as always more to come!
Jim, If you want to photograph Eagles, you should come up here to Alaska. They are as thick as blackbirds are down there. If you want to go to Homer, then this month and March are the last months the Eagles will be fed for photography. In November, go to Haines Alaska where the worlds largest concentration of Eagles are available for photography. Up to 3000 Eagles are there feeding on the last Salmon run of the year.
The fun part (the addictive part) of watching these 4 ft tall birds is the way they act. It is fascinating. My favorite shots are of the way they fight each other over the food.
This guy was fishing, only to have a larger male come and steal the meal before a third bird stops in for any leftovers. The second bird squaks, asserting his ownership..
These were from much further away, probably 100yards or more. You can get several thousand shots here, enough to process for a long time. This is my fourth or fifth year on these, we get em for about a five week window as they return North to Canada from California and Mexican waters...fascinating. Thank you all for the kind comments.
Great composition on the perched pair Marty. I'm getting ready to get everything charged up and ready for another day out there tomorrow. Looks like you've been having a good shooting season out there.
