I've been wondering about watermarking and signatures on images. Do any of you do the digital non-visible watermarking that you register? Also, I notice some people put a year on the signature/copyright and some don't. What is the purpose of adding a year? Is there some copyright coverage purpose for that?

Thanks, Diana

Copyright law states the correct way to label photos is
© 2009 David C. Ramey
or
copyright 2009 David C. Ramey

you have to use either the copyright symbol or the word copyright followed by the year and followed by the copyright owner

This is the correct way to label for copyright notification.
A lot of people label for other purposes besides "official copyright notice".

I don't use digital water marking to embed the file outside of what the camera already is set to do. I know it can also be done in PS.

For 'display' images, I just do a simple watermark on the image (though the reality is that once it is on the 'net anyone can pretty much click on anything).

Actually, no, it doesn't. The year and symbol requirements were done away with several years ago.

I would say it is highly advisable to label as David has stated. Copyright / Date / Owner or DBA. Without it your work will likely be subject to revisions in the Orphan Works laws. I think it also helps your brand to watermark / sign your work.

Of course, the most important thing is to register your work with the Copyright Office. Without that it doesn't pay too well to pursue infringement.

Jim, I think your sources are mistaken.

"Form of Notice for Visually Perceptible Copies
The notice for visually perceptible copies should contain all
the following three elements:
1 The symbol © (the letter C in a circle), or the word
“Copyright,” or the abbreviation “Copr.”; and
2 The year of first publication of the work. In the case of
compilations or derivative works incorporating previously
published material, the year date of first publication of
the compilation or derivative work is sufficient. The year
date may be omitted where a pictorial, graphic, or sculptural
work, with accompanying textual matter, if any, is
reproduced in or on greeting cards, postcards, stationery,
jewelry, dolls, toys, or any useful article; and
3 The name of the owner of copyright in the work, or an
abbreviation by which the name can be recognized, or a
generally known alternative designation of the owner.
Example: © 2008 John Doe
The “C in a circle” notice is used only on “visually perceptible
copies.” Certain kinds of works—for example, musical,
dramatic, and literary works—may be fixed not in “copies”..."

Quoted today from Copyright Office

Thanks, I didn't realize that the camera could do it, I assume this can be set as part of the properties? Or is it inserted into the file properties with software you use to download the images? When I download images off my card I just drag the images from the SDHC card to the folder I want. The images end up with the photo properties, and I see an option for copyright but I assumed that had to be added by other software? Guess I'll pop in the DVD that came with my camera (Canon XSi) and see what's there. I know Zoombrowser is there, I used an old version of that years ago from my Canon Elph but it was such a memory hog.

Thanks for the tips on the copyright, I remember hearing something about no need to use the year and copyright mark and I suspect it has very specific application to how the image is published/used? More homework...

Thanks again, Diana

Diana,

Look in your EOS Utility software. With the last several models, Canon has allowed you to put a copyright notice in the camera. You have to connect your camera to the computer and fill in your info. It is under Control your Camera/Settings
