Hey Guys,

What could NOT be a virus that would wipe out my NWP e-mails (but not also my other accounts)? Also, what are folks doing to back-up e-mails in an expeditious manner?

I am currently using Thunderbird but am debating moving to Outlook 2007...though honestly, I am not sure if that would be protected from something like that happening since I still do not understand what caused this.

James

I use Thunderbird and have all but two of my machines set up with IMAP accounts so that the emails all stay on the sever.

I have one laptop and one desktop with POP3 settings set so that they download a copy of the email while leaving the original on the server.

This way, if any of my machines crap out or the server dies I still have copies.

Hey Jim,

How do you do this, if you don't mind my asking? We were talking about putting the e-mail on the server that I can access, but I am concerned about security.

James

I'm not sure about how the server end of things works. I use my web-host for email.

On the client end, when you set up the accounts in Thunderbird, you can choose to use POP3 or IMAP. From there, you just have to enter the right info.

I originally started using IMAP so I could keep all my machines synced. Mark a message read on one machine and it shows as read on all of them, for example. The one pitfall is that if you delete a message on one machine, it deletes it from the server. I get around that by having my POP3 machines set to check email every 5 minutes and download a copy of anything new.

James,

It is under Account Settings, click around Advanced Settings and look for Leave messages on Server for xxx days. That is Outlook, but Thunderbird is similar. Email goes through the servers anyway, so this isn't any more or less secure than not doing it.

That's only for POP3 accounts though.

Hi Robert,

Welcome to the forum. What makes 2007 more secure?

Hey Jim,

Thanks. I will try that out later. How long are you leaving e-mail on the server for? Also, how large is your server e-mail account?

Thanks
James
