How are the colors in these? I confess, I usually start with a WhiBal gray card for white balance, and do the final tweaks by eye. But I am wondering if my monitor is right. So, how's my color?

Great to see you around - and thanks for sharing some of your work! The colors look dead on. Were these Auto WB? My favorites are the 2nd and the last. The second is quite crisp and almost 3d. The last one has a great - and different - composition. It looks like they were having a blast.

They did have fun, just out romping in the yard. I thought we’d be out longer, but they seemed to get a little cold. And the old one in your favorite shot was tiring. She’s 9 and goes in short bursts.

The white balance was set to sunny, but I readjusted it slightly to the gray card shot, I took. I have never been happy with Nikon’s white balance. And I wish I could take credit for the composition on that last shot, but when you are tracking them with a 180mm prime, you get what you get:)

I thought my color was OK, but you never know since I have nothing for calibration. I have a CRT that is setup pretty well, but setting that one correctly will mess up the color on my LCD. Moving the picture from CRT to LCD I see a huge difference and started second guessing myself. Thanks for the reassurance.

No problem. The discrepancy is a bit difficult at first. I just moved to the LCD display this year after dreading the move for so long. Having said that, I find that my LCD actually goes out of calibration less often than my CRT did. Colors appear to be dead on with the particular model I am using (Thanks, Roman...the Dell 2208 rocks) - though I still find the angle of viewing to be pretty limited.

Which monitor did you get? Also, why not get a calibration tool to make sure that things are 'as they appear?'

I run an IBM P96 CRT as my primary monitor and a cheapy, Samsung SyncMaster 225BW LCD as my second display. Years ago I went through some adjusting to make my CRT “true”, no calibration scanner, just a few tweaks. And it has been pretty good. Unfortunately what I do in order to get the CRT right, fowls up the LCD, since only one profile is run at a time. If I sold some work, I would have justification to buy a spyder or something, but I have not sold much. The shop I use, on the few occasions that I make prints, always adjust things slightly anyway. So in the end, it’s no real problem.

After adjusting, for 2.2 gama, this image should show no color casts and as set, I see almost none.
