Hey George,

Thanks for the info and link. I am trying to figure out what small 'staycations' I can do around NYC. I may try to sucker my friend Larry to head out with me to Benezette, PA to see more elk. Allegedly, they have the largest population the Eastern seaboard, with a population of about 800 spread over a fairly large region.

We were out there last year and saw some of them. The herd is still kind of tiny, but you do get to see them more prominently that you might see otherwise.

James

James,

I thought you guys spent alot of time up at Jackson Hole. I would think you would have had enough elk after spending time up there?

LOL, there are NEVER ENOUGH ELK!! The reason why I love Jackson is because of the wildlife. There is no place like it that I have ever seen. LOL, it is almost like a giant petting zoo. You have no idea how many times I have heard, "Harold, take a picture of me with the bison..." or something to that order.

Chanthee and I are scheduling to be out there from Sept 22 through early October.

James

Petra and I have committed to doing more camping this year. Just got back from two weeks at Dinosaur National Monument. Also on the agenda are trips to Northern New Mexico, Grand Canyon, and the Sedona & Oak Creek Canyon area.

I was thinking of going to Cedar Breaks Nat Mon & Capitol Reef Nat Park, but have decided to hold off and wait till the leaves start changing.

I did not really get any really good photos at Dinosaur, but I do have a bunch of bracketed exposures that I plan to try and do HDR with after I get my new computer later this summer.

Other than try and learn better processing skills and sort thru all my Australia photos, I think my wife and I are going to get a GSD in a month or two...

You're going to get a German Shepard or is this a new camera body title?

Going to Acadia NP at the end of July for a week of hiking and shooting. I would appreciate any input from anyone who has experience with photography there.

Hey Durwood,

When are you going to be there? I am going to be there next week (Starting Wednesday and ending on Saturday) for a 4 day stint. The great thing about Acadia is that there is a TON to do there in a very convenient package.

I recently posted a bunch of photos from there in the Nature Photography Section. Some places to go:

Bass Harbor Lighthouse (My favorite landscape place in Acadia...bar none)...for sunset. It has always been too foggy when I tried to go for sunrise.

Cadillac Mountain for Sunrise (though there is also some popular sunset locations)...it is the first place in the Continental US to see the sun rise.

Thunder Hole Area (along the park loop) for Sun Rise and early morning photography.

Jordan Pond for Sunset...

Bubble Rock for morning (not sunrise...but perhaps after sunrise)...it is near Jordan Pond.

The Birch Forest (it has a French name that I cannot recall, but it is loaded with Birch...it is a 1/4 mile hike from the garden for early morning, post sunrise).

Schooner Head - My first shot of it was at sunrise...but the more I look at it, I think late afternoon prior to sunset would be best.

Hope this helps.

James

PS If you can book the puffin trip out of Jonseport, I would consider it. I am going on the 23rd (again).

Hey Durwood,

I thought you might find this interesting. It is from the National Park News Thread dated on the 13th.

Acadia National Park News:
Mr. President, Some Suggestions for Your Long Weekend At Acadia National Park
hree days might not qualify for official "vacation" status, but the First Family's trip this weekend to Acadia National Park should provide enough time for President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and their kids to sample some of the highlights of this Down East treasure.
