I like the shots, they have good color and show the rider and the horse jumping. I dont follow jumping but I do photograph rodeos and horse races. I am curious, is it "standard" to include all the jumps etc. in the photo? I notice a lot of space around the action. . .

What would happen if you were to shoot it like this:

It is fairly standard to include all the jumps, though occasionally, a verticle is done for effect.

I couldn't hold the camera for 12 hours a day, so, I had it on a tripod

Most people want to see what the whole horse is doing. I will crop it portrait style if the back end is doing something funky, like twisting or uneven back feet.

gotcha, I thought as much. You do a fine job, and under full bright sun, tough for any subject, you're getting good colors and detail in the shadows, well done, thanks for posting. . .

If the photo is for the competitor they prefer to be able to see the total jump (wings, height, spread, crossbars) and the full horse to see "what it is doing" with front and rear action. If it is for publication, closer in are often used. Sometimes a horse magazine cover-shot is just the horses head and rider's face/head. So there are no "rules" it depends on the use. In general the jump should be in the shot.

Nice job Julie. I too noticed you are getting good detail on the shadow side on what looks like a sunny day. How did you do that, is it post processing? Or maybe it was just lightly overcast and not full sun? Regardless the photos are really great!

3/4 of the show was overcast or raining. Sunday morning it was actually pretty and sunny, but it was morning. So, the light wasn't too harsh yet

I do usually bump my mid tones up in PS. So, it may be a combination of both the lighting and post processing. The sun was coming up right into the faces, so, the positioning couldn't have been better. I had to sit on that end of the arena as there wasn't really decent access to the other areas
