Don, welcome. Idaho Falls is a great place!

First, it's great that youre getting out and taking photographs of the things you love! It's a wonderful experence, aint it!

If I had one bit of advise for you it would be to FOCUS on the subject, and try to express somthing in the shot. What you have is a number of shots that capture a time and a subject, but lack a message. Take the goose shot for example. It's two geese, and some other ducks around the edges, photographed at the human eye's perspective. I think ducks and geese have to be focused at their eye level or below (for flying birds) otherwise they look like ducks in a park. . . So, crouch down to shoot ducks - and any most other wildlife for that matter. . .

The cat shots are similar. Cats are predators, they are best photographed at eye level or below. And, you should focus on the subject of the shot and then snap the shutter. Again, it looks to me like you were rambleing by and took a picture of a cat in the zoo. I can imagine it's tough to get good shots at the zoo (I've never been to one and taken photos) so it may not be possible to get the feeling you want from a zoo shot, but the rules still apply.

The falls shot topped the building, it would have been a better shot had you left attached the top of the building - so, since you chopped it off, I'm left to think about what you are trying to tell me, is it a shot of a pile of sticks jamed in a manmade diversion? or is a landmark among landmarks in the Idaho Falls area?

Finally, light and eyes are the two most critial aspects of wildlife photography - after compositon, and equipment. So, try to shoot durring those early and late periods, and know your equipment and learn animal behavior!

Keep it up. . .

you can search this site and should find a number of examples. Go to wildlife forum, and look at every post I've started. Most have a photo or two. I'll start you off with this one. . . I'm not much a a birder, not enough meat on em for my taste!

you can also check, www.tonybynum.photosite.com for some shots from 2004 and 2003.

Donald, I have to agree with Tony, the eyes are very important as is the right light. I routinely head out around 0500 to get to a site as the morning light is hitting. Gives a nice warm glow and really lights up the eyes of my subjects. Also, it helps to watch the angle you are shooting at. If you can get down on the ground and shoot your subject at their level it gives a pleasing aspect. In the past years I would just lay on the ground and let the subjects come to me. Anyway, this was shot yesterday around 0730-0800. Knowing your subject and where to find them helps as well as a bit of good luck.

i 100% agree with the luck part. Most of my best shots are "luck." However, I know my equipment and am always ready for that once in a lifetime shot. It's very tiring but when you get that shot it's all worth it!

I would only add that luck only happens to people who are out there making it happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
