welcome to the site. I'm glad you posted a shot. I will jump right in with a few suggestions.
the pose is nice, the crop is good. the color I feel is off, it's too green. I also think it's out of focus, and there's camera shake. I dont think it's a publishable image.
I also think you would need to shoot it a little lower, at eye level, or a bit lower. I think you need sharp hair to have a good "wild" animal shot.
Hi Tony, Thank you for critiquing my image. Unfortunately, I can't take that one at a lower level, although I have several hundred different shots of this one, taken tons of different poses at different settings, trying to get it "right". As far as it being green, how can you tell? I'm not being smart, I really can't tell that the hue is off. I can certainly change that in CS2, but man, its hard for me to tell. I also have no luxury of taking these with additional lighting, I have to rely solely on natural light and have just begun to be able to take "decent" shots at a more acceptable ISO (I had relied a lot on 1600 and had to neatimage the noise out; got tired of doing that). I appreciate your help!! Love your work!!!

Maura, I what are you using for monitor calibration? I did not relize that, that shot was a HI ISO shot. It does not look like it. I can tell it's green because it is. . . LOL, I'm not kidding either. . . I'd mess with it but it's in a format that I cant read. post it as a jpg or bitmap and maybe I can play with it. Post a few more so we can see them. . . Thanks for the compliment. have you looked at the shots on my webpage? www.tonybynum.photosite.com They are are shots for 04 and 05 and nothing from that last year.

Hi Tony, Yeah, its a fairly high ISO (800). It was overcast and the macaques are in a shaded area, so its been a challenge all along to work towards decreasing noise. Its weird, the picture I posted here was a jpeg, not sure why it didn't show as one. I did do a few adjustments and it does look less green. I have to add that his fur does have a bit of iridesence to it and picks up the foliage tint a little. I have taken literally hundreds of shots of these guys, as its great practice for working with fast moving subjects in low lighting. I have tons of other animals as well, here is a link to my gallery.. http://www.photopoints.com/main/photos/photographer.aspx?ID=15056
...you can kind of see the evoluation of my recent work. Its getting there, slowly, lol. Keep in mind, i've been at this for 6 months, so thats not bad for that short a period of time (I think, lol). So those shots are from a year or two ago Tony? They are great captures, would love to see more! Thanks for all your help!!

Hi Maura!
Welcome aboard! Anyway, I was thinking the same thing about the image of the minkey. He looks very green - and it did not appear natural to me.
Can you talk a bit about the post processing you did on this image, if any?
James
Hi James! As far as post processing, I take these (the macaque photos) through fairly thick glass, under poor lighting conditions. Because of this, they come out of the camera soft and I had traditionally used shadow/highlight and curves to bring out details and make the image pop a bit more than it had. Now, I make several adjustment layers (i'm talking specifically with these particular type of photos only, not all my work). I create screen, multiply, curves and channel mixer adjustment layers and adjust the opacity of each layer as necessary. I also might use a hue/adjustment layer. After the work, I flatten the image and if it was taken at that high ISO, I would usually have to run neat image to decrease the grain. That seems to work without degrading the image, although if anyone has suggestions, i'd certainly appreciate them. I seem to have no problem taking images with good or even bright light, but I am kind of struggling with lousy light captures. I do like the softer look they have though, it almost lends a surreal feeling to the image.

tough to shoot through glass!!!!!!!!
Youve done, i think, about as good as anyone could.
You did not mention your calibration methods. . . It's not so important but if you want to see what other's see on their screen, you have to have an accuratley calibrated monitor othwise there's little sence talking about color. . .
thanks for posting!
Thanks for all your help, this forum is great! I have had my monitor calibrated in the past, but probably need to redo it. Thing is though, I have had several of my shots printed by professional online labs with no color correction, and they look great. Weird. You're not kidding about shooting through glass, wish we had more outdoor habitats here.
