While they are technically "night" herons, these Black Crowned Night Herons are pretty active during the day when it's nesting season. Here are some shots of these birds in action.

Hey George,

Nice collection of images. I particularly like the 3rd shot of the heron in flight. It would have been great if you could have gotten that far wing in the frame of the photo - however, it is still solid. The interesting thing about that 2nd to last shot is that it looks to me like the heron is carrying a chicken foot and not a branch, am I correct in that?

James,

Thanks for the kind words. I too wish I could have caught that juvenile a little wider, but it was coming right at me and I just had to react and shoot as fast as I could. I was really glad that my D200-Sigma100-300 was fast enough to keep it in focus.

That is sort of a "chicken foot" since these birds do cluck like chickens. The Night Herons do this funny thing that looks like running in air and in that particular shot, the bird brought its foot up level with its beak. From the angle of the shot its foot looks like it is in its mouth.

George

Great shots. Night Herons are only migrants here in this part of Virginia so they are "rare birds" for photo ops here.
