I don't actually own a good tripod yet, but I do have a kick-butt Manfrotto mono-pod.

...and since I'm off to Europe in 3 weeks, I've been wrestling with whether to take the 'pod or not.

I mean, I KNOW it could come in handy for many types of shots, but is it enough to balance the hassle of security and carrying it around every day.

I do not have an external flash yet, either, so I know night shots/indoors will need some help - but I'm pretty handy at using a nearby wall or door frame to help me out.

Thoughts?

Is it worth it when traveling to pack the 'pod as well?

Duane,
if you have it, you can use it. If you don't have it, you can't. Having it doesn't mean you have to use it; it just means that you have the capability for those shots where it's a necessity.

When I travel, it comes with me. Sometimes I use it; sometimes I don't. But I always have the option.

Personally I wouldnt be caught dead without a tripod....they will probably bury it with me...LOL!!!

But to each their own.....depends on what your shooting...and what you expect to do with the output.

Trip snaps...and always on the go in the city....wouldnt bring one....use faster shutter speeds and medium fast ISO.

Out in the wilderness making sellable images....tripod it is.

I am going to suggest 'a tripod always.' You don't need to spend 700 on a set-up either. Manfrotto makes some decent affordable ones with pan heads that do the job for not too much money. They are heavier than I would like, but get the job done affordably.
