My first response to your question was going to be that I'm sure it would make a difference. But then the scientist in me asked if that was really the case. So I took one of my jpg images with ~16 million colors and converted it to a gif with a adaptive pallete of 256 colors. On my monitor I can see some subtle differences but the gif actually looked surprisingly good although I think the jpg looks richer in color. Here they both are. You be the judge. (You may have to open two web windows with the two different images side by side).
