Park’s night skies profiled
ACADIA NAT’L PARK — The November issue of “National Geographic Magazine” recognizes the park’s night skies as some of the best anywhere. “Starry nights have become rare and exotic skyscapes for many Americans,” according to a story titled “Vanishing Night.” Acadia National Park’s “excellent conditions for stargazing” made the list of four “spots offering” the nation’s “darkest nights” for “star chasing.”

Death Valley: Furnace Creek Inn's golfers' package
Fall is a great time to visit Death Valley National Park, as temperatures are now bearable (below the 100-degree mark anyway) yet the park sees few crowds at this time of year. And if you’re a golfer, there’s extra incentive to visit, with Furnace Creek Inn & Ranch Resort’s accommodations-and-golf package. This is your chance to tee off at 214 feet below sea level, on the world’s lowest course.

Deep inside Denali National Park is an institution. I’ve not had the privilege of visiting Camp Denali but it is definitely on the list of 1,000 places to see before I journey onward. Twice I drove the road lottery as far as you can go, so I have been in the neighborhood and seen the incredible countryside where it is situated.

Rising water in Florida's Everglades threatens wildlife
The Everglades are drowning. Canals along Alligator Alley have spilled over banks into roadside swales. Deer have been driven from flooded-out tree islands to strips of dry ground - mostly canal levees, but a few have even been spotted on the porches of empty hunting cabins.
