Diana,
truly a dog that belies its appearance. Long ago, I was visiting a girl at a college in New Haven, CT and they had parietal hours where guys could actually visit the girls in their rooms. There were 3 girls in the room and 3 guys visiting and just talking, joking and having fun. As it got closer to the 11 p.m. roundup hour, we heard the guard making his patrol to remind everyone to get ready to leave and he was accompanied by his guard dog, a Bulldog named Chesley.
Chesley was famous (or infamous) in the dorm for his ability to make strong boys weep and immediately leave. But we were having fun and we kinda ignored the warnings until I discovered, as I was laying across one of the beds with my head over the side, Chesley looking me in the eye upside down! Chesley had a breathing problem and he tended to rasp a lot but as I looked at him from my vantage point, he looked adorable so I simply took his head in my hands and gave him a big, upside down kiss. He washed my face. The guard laughed. The girls and guys in the room laughed and I gave my new buddy Chesley some of our potato chips.
I've always remembered that big, ugly, intimidating boy for what he really was: a sweet, lovable and loving guy that most people avoided. Because of how Chesley sounded with his breathing problem, his nickname became (after a song of the same era) J'et aime. I always listened for him late at night when we were visiting and always enjoyed giving him his guy-kisses.
Thanks for the Bulldog puppy pics. They brought back some really nice memories.
