That is weird that it has an integrated extender. It's not clear if it can be taken off or not. I imagine this will replace the 100-400L.

Yeah - I am not 100% sure how I feel about the integrated extender. I wonder how (if at all) it can be disabled and if a 2x extender may be placed on the lens.

I am also very curious to see what the price tag on this baby will be. I currently have the money saved for a 300 F2.8, but I may reconsider. The ability to zoom is a nice thing. :P

Here's what Artie Morris has to say about it: http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/2011/02/0...lephoto-lenses/

I'm not so sure -- at the projected price point, it will make the 100-400L a real bargain. As for an integrated extender, it appears from the write-ups to be able to be disabled and by making it integral, Canon ensures the best possible optical fit between the lens and the extender. I kinda like it. If their objective is truly to optimize image sharpness then why not incorporate the best match between lens and extender as a single unit?

Personally, I think either the 500L and 600L would be perfect for next year's Superbowl gig which I assume I'll get from one of the major Sports Magazines grin!
