Pu uhonua O Honaunau National Park

Pu uhonua O Honaunau National Park - 04/17/08 04:25 PM

Located on the Big Island of Hawaii, this Nat'l Park was a "point of refuge" for locals who had broke taboo rules. If they reached this point before they were killed the preist could absolve them from death.

Cheers

In anciet times, Hawaiians lived under strict laws such as they (as commoners) were not able to touch any of the chiefs possessions, walk in his footsteps or let their footsteps touch royal ground, if they did the penalty was death. Hawaiians would chase the offender down and put him to death unless he could reach the area of "point of refuge" or "city of refuge". Also, defeated warriors and non-combatants could reach the "point of refuge" during battle, one then could be purified and absolved of any wrong doing and thereby return to society.
This area on the Big Island of Hawaii was made a Nat'l Park in 1961 and is 182 acres in size.

Thanks, Nolad for the answer. It must have been a very cool place to visit. Did you go anywhere else while you were in Hawaii?

We visited the active volcano Kiluaea, (Volcanos Nat'l Park)from the caldera at the top to the steaming, streaming of lava into the ocean.
We also did a night dive with the Mantarays off the airport runway, 13 Mantas came in and joined our group of 6 divers.
Then we headed over to Maui for a week at Kaanapali, one of the most beautiful areas on earth. We did some dives at Molokini Crater each dive we could hear the whales singing underwater. One day we rented a Harley and toured out towards Hana

Great pics here. I was in Maui this March as well. It is photography heaven. I have been to many islands, but this was #1. When we checked into our hotel, they told us we would be able to see the whales from our room. I thought, yeah, right, maybe one or two............wrong....all day , it was incredible. I will never ever forget the sound of them underwater, I to was diving there.
The road to Hana was the most beautiful coastline drive of my life.
Here a few from my portfolio...

all shot on Canon 20D. When I am done in Utah I wanna be in Hawaii.

Hi Marty, that is one lucky picture of the whale breaching as I tried but failed numerous times to catch a piture like that.
Great pictures, I agree with you about Maui being a photogenic place.
We think Maui at Kaanapali is one of the most beautiful places we've stayed in the world, the beach and ocean in front of you and behind you, beautiful mountain views.

Great shot of Pu uhonua O Honaunau National Park - another example of an amazing National Park. We did not visit there, just Maui, but it looks like it is now on the list.

We were also at Kanapali, there were so many whales it was amazing. Even so, it took a lot of patient waiting and watching for the breach shot- you just didn't know where and when they'd jump. That one with the 70-300 IS. Thank's for commenting. Quite amazing to see these enormous mammals jumping like trout in a lake. And the songs- what an eerie sound- try to describe it, you can not. (only heard underwater).

I would seriously like to spend some time in the new National Marine Preserve created by congress in the northern part of the islands last year- less traffic there. I found the diving off Maui not so spectacular, but good, and I'll bet there is better when you are off the obvious tracts.

Two more with my travel kit, 20D and 17-85 , 70-300 or 10-22

Those are really nice Marty. Here's a few that might remind you of a place you went to. We too loved the whales singing on the dives.

A few more from underneath............... very difficult to get these as water clarity, 40-50 ft only, usually some current... these the best of the lot , again I would like to know the insiders local views....

Nice butterflys and the angle is great on the turtle. I did not have that clarity in Maui, are they on the big island?

The Butterflys are from Molokini, the turtle at St. Anthony's wreck (Maui). Most of the areas close to shore on this trip were terrible viz., but Molokini was great. At the wreck the viz was good, must have been the current. Here are a couple from the wreck. You can see why they call those turtles - Green Turtles.

Those are very good. But I will not be out turtled.

This last guy was at 140 ft, I could not believe he was down that far, resting on the sand.

A few things I keep in mind on those shark parties:

Line them up a little:

Get them to smile for the camera:

And get that lighting aimed a little to both sides for perfect balance without hotspots:
