The Long Overdue GBR Pics - 12/29/10 07:42 AM
From my four dives in the Great Barrier Reef (Australian National Park and World Heritage Area).
These are taken with my wife's little 8mp Canon Powershot SD1100 with a fairly nice underwater case. The flash was way to bright, and I forgot to attach the little extra thing to the case that diffuses it a bit, so most of these shots lack the real colors, and do not due the Reef justice. I don't even know where to begin with processing these, so its just bare jpeg here. Anyways, here are a few of the ones I like.

Hey, Tyler, I took an introductory course to Adobe Photoshop earlier this year. Unfortunately I haven't put anything I learned to use yet, but that is beside the point. What is relevant is that touching up your photos is something you could easily do. The course I took was either 4 or 6 weeks long. This was at a community college. It is amazing what you can learn in a short time from someone who knows of what they speak.
Will have to see if I can scrap up the money to take the regular course they offer. (My wife thinks it is a waste of my time...and money.
)
I like the first shot the most, and the last is very good also. Don't think I would have the nerve to handle such an ugly creature.

Thanks for the comments everyone. The dives were such a wonderful experience.
Diane - They kept calling them "Nemo Fish" for all the tourists on the boat, and I couldn't help but post that pic immediately for my family on my personal FB page with the status of "Found Nemo", however I was able to see 4 other varieties of clown fish as well, with different oranges and stripe patterns.
Sunstruck - The turtle and the reef shark were my favorites to see in person. They warned us the turtles are really sensitive and to not get close. This guy worried me cause I saw him initially about 30 feet below me, and he started to come towards the surface. He insisted on swimming in whichever direction I was moving in, so no matter what I did, I couldn't get out of his way. Luckily, I was able to move away from him, but not till he was 5 feet away :S
James - The sea cucumbers and some of the anemones are the only things you're allowed to touch in the reef. It's really hard to describe how they feel too. The anemones that are in my clown fish pic feel like a big koosh-ball toy that's been in the hands of a kid who had messy candy all day and smeared until every little strand was sticky. The cucumbers felt like giant, sticky, squishy, flexible corn on the cob.
It doesn't show in the picture very well, but in #7 the coral formation was the brightest green I've ever seen. I had a few moments during the dives I had to stop and say "Wow", but none bigger than when I saw that. It was like a coral sandcastle the color of AstroTurf.

They are lovely shots Tyler, glad you enjoyed your trip to Aust. Tonight we are pretty much in fear of Cyclone Yasi which will hit us in about two hours. It is now a category 5, I think you call them hurricanes or typhoons at that strength. It will cross the Great Barrier Reef, there has to be some damage, we hope not too severe. The damage to Queensland coastal towns is expected to be horrendous.
Townsville has now lost power with the strong leading winds, thousands of people have been evacuated. Innisfail and Cairns are also in the line of fire. They say it will still be a Cat. 3 when it has moved over 1-200 miles inland.
It is huge, the biggest cyclone in memory to hit Australia. Meantime my state (Victoria) is being hit by bushfires - and we are seeing a lot on the news of the snowstorms in the USA.

Ya its crazy whats going on down there right now. My wife's home town was flooded 2 months ago, and then last month Brisbane was hit hard too (another spot we visited more family at). Hopefully things will start turning around.
