Wild Goose Island, St. Mary Lake, Glacier National

Wild Goose Island, St. Mary Lake, Glacier National - 07/11/06 02:32 AM

Here is another photograph from my recent trip to Glacier National Park. As the title says this is Wild Goose Island. This island/scene draws a lot of photographers and photographs - some more famous than others.
I hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for looking.

Hey Joe,

Thanks for sharing. What time of day is it? It looks like it was some pretty challenging light.

James,

This photograph was taken just a little before 3 pm so yes the light was a bit problematic. I tried to 'reel in' the issues somewhat in PS - not sure if I succeeded completely.

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the response. Can you tell me what you tried to real in? Looking at the sky, you have these big bright clouds and rich saturated sky. The ground is very shaded. It is almost like two different photos stacked upon each other.

James -

Here is the original, unprocessed image. It is only one image

Here's what I did:

  • Cropped up a little from the bottom and from the left
  • Punched up the saturation in the sky
  • Tried to tone down the haze in the mountains
  • Apply USM to the entire image.

I guess reel in might not have been the correct phrase to use.

Great shot-hope I see that someday. Interesting to see the original shot, thank's. Looks like a touch of sensor dust, by the way, what was the aperture set at? On these landscape shots with a small aperture, it seems to come from nowhere.

Marty - about 10 hours drive and well worth it. I just made the trip from Ogden Valley to there!

Marty -

This is a great spot! Make all attempts to get out to GNP.

As for EXIF data here you go:
17-40mm @ 21mm,
1/20 sec,
f/22,
ISO: 100

You're right about the sensor dust. I cloned it out of the processed image that starts this thread.
