Portrait of Pharaoh

Portrait of Pharaoh - 01/23/09 11:14 PM

Meet Ramesses. This lovely fellow belongs to Laurie WIlliams from the T.V. Show America's Greatest Dog and the owner of Pupniron Canine Fitness and Learning Center. I've had the privilege of working with her and all her canine companions for a couple months now. We met at a photo fundraiser she hosted for a local dog club and I was very impressed with her clients' dogs, so I've started in her apprenticeship program as well. The things I'm learning there have had a pretty big impact on my photography.

I'm finding head shots of him to be a bit of a challenge. Frame too low and he looks like a deer; too high and he looks like a hand puppet. I like this particular pose though. I think it shows his royal heritage.

My main nit with this image is that it is a little darker on the left than on the right. Laurie stepped right in front of my strobe, but if I want to make it truly high-key and blow the background completely that won't be an issue.

Jim,
a very pretty photo of a very nice Pharoah Hound. Lovely breed. Those ears are important and you got them up and forward as necessary.

The background -- on my monitor -- is just a bit pink but otherwise, it's a lovely shot.

Good job!

Great shot Jim. +1 on the pink tint of the background.

Thanks guys.

On the "pink" I'm wondering if you are using the default, green forum template. When I was, I noticed a lot of pink looking backgrounds too. I measured this one and the values are almost completely even throughout, and in those cases where they are not, the R channel is not more than 3 above the others.

Yep, looks pink in IE and looks 'right' in PS. Don't know why.

Well, I guess everybody has their own personal preferences. Here is a quick edit.

So...here is how I would 'fix' the background:

Seriously Jim, this is a great shot of pretty pup. Well lit, well done.

That's just too cool! And quite timely actually as Laurie wants to try an Egyptian background. Maybe I could do with the Sphinx what you did with the cat!

LOL, Preston! That's awesome.

Jim - I think you are being a little hard on yourself in terms of the lighting. I think it is a great shot. As to the 'pink' thing....hmmm. You may have answered some of my questions from the last few weeks.

Thanks James.

This is certainly a keeper, but there is always room for improvement. Actually, noticing the lighting helped me with my big shoot on Saturday. I was very careful to notice when a handler / owner was in front of one of the lights.

I hope those questions were answered in a helpful way

This is one of those breeds I consider the "high fashion runway model" of the dog world - - all angles, and oddness - - but when you capture them right in a photo - beautiful!

I think you are doing this breed right with your photo - he is very handsome!

The shot with cat in the background from psmith about made me fall out of my chair I was laughing so hard!
