Chroma's first dog show...

She didn't do anything in the classes, but, won Best puppy in sweeps! The judge's comment was she moves like a dream!(and she does, not seen much that moves as effortlessly as she does) Three old time breeder judges came up to me (spectators) and told me how nice she was. The ringside comments alone were worth the trip, even if she couldn't win her class

She was calm and happy and behaved like a seasoned show dog. I can't say enough good things about my pick puppy from my favorite dog in the world!

I handled her *0k*. I am not learned enough to do a great job, but, I do *ok*. Grahm handled her in sweeps and on Sunday. She has taken a liking to her

I had an long time whippet breeder(50 years worth) say to me "This is your first litter? We work for a lifetime to get a puppy like this and you get it right the first time!"

She's very nice, Julie. Yup, she's gonna be a lot of fun. When they are correct, they move like water runs -- effortlessly. When they're not correct, they have to work at it. Congrats on Chroma's debut. Going to Perry?

Congrats! I must confess to not knowing the difference between classes and sweeps.

Not going to Perry, The national ends the weekend Perry begins and after being there that long. I am going to be BEAT. I will need a month at home to a) finish orders and b) decompress. I am a homebody by nature and long shows take it out of me

JimP, classes are regular offered classes that go toward winners which will earn you points. Sweeps is more of a prestige class that is done by a breeder judge who doesn't have to have their license yet.

Ah, sort of the breed equivalent of the agility run-through.

Sweepstakes Classes
The AKC Glossary defines the sweepstakes as being "A non-regular competition offered in conjunction with regular classes at specialty shows for puppies or veterans. Class divisions, requirements and conditions are established by the club." This definition is expanded by veterinarian M. C. Wakeman, at The Actual Dog Show site, which explains that the sweeps classes are for "6- to 18-month-old puppies and young adult." Although no championship points are awarded for sweepstakes wins, the entry money is often divided into cash prizes for the top winners.

Futurity Classes
Like the sweepstakes competition, the futurity is a series of special classes held for a single breed. Unlike the sweeps, however, the participants must be nominated before and shortly after birth to be able to compete. In addition, the dog's owner must pay a series of fees before the date of the futurity. The national breed club usually sponsors futurity competitions, which are held in conjunction with the breed's "nationals," the specialty show(s) held under the authority of the national breed club and that club's national registry. One example of such a show would be the American Brittany Club show, which conforms to the rules and breed standard published by the American Kennel Club.

Importance of Sweeps and Futurity Classes
The requirement to renew the litter or puppy futurity nomination requires the breeder or owner to repeatedly evaluate the dog(s) in question. In addition, sweeps and futurity classes are often judged by individuals who have repeatedly produced winning dogs in that breed over a period of years. Such scrutiny on the upcoming generation of show dogs and breeding stock performs an invaluable service for breeders

Interesting. The walk-throughs are more like practice runs or dress rehearsals designed to combat "ring-wise" issues and get used to a trial environment over a training environment.

No, these aren't walk throughs. They are more prestigious wins that don't count for any AKC points. I won $10 lol I think the National futurity winner wins something like $1800. Winning the futurity at the national is a BIG deal

I'm not sure either but it may be similar. Sweepstakes are usually limited to puppies under 18 months of age and there is a separate entry fee which is divided among the puppies that place after expenses are taken out. Regular AKC Breed judges cannot judge a Sweepstakes in a Breed for which they are approved. While different clubs do it differently, generally there is a Best In Sweepstakes, Best Of Opposite Sex Sweepstakes and may be a Best Junior Dog, Best Senior Dog and the same for the bitches. The winners get a very nice rosette and a proportionate split of the pot. Sweepstakes do not count toward accumulating Championship points.
