Bristlecone Pine snag

Bristlecone Pine snag - 08/13/11 01:16 AM

I escaped what passes for civilization and spent last weekend in the White Mountains amongst the Bristlecone Pine. Cloudless skys prompted me to try a bit of night photography (see Bristlecone Pines 2011). Those cloudless skys also made for less than dramatic sunrises. Nevertheless, I was at Patriarch's Grove at 5am - even without drama, its an humbling place.

Wandered about most of the morning and happened on this scene, which is what this post is about:

I alternate between finding it compelling and finding it boring. Comments would be appreciated.

The horizon is almost exactly in the middle. You have two objects competing for attention. The dead pine, and the large rock in the front of the image. Your attention is split between the foreground and the background. Try cropping the photo from the log laying on the ground up. The photo is a little over exposed. Can you fix that in post? Have you considered processing this in B&W?
