October NWP Photo Forum Challenge - 10/17/11 04:23 AM
Hey Everyone,
The challenge for the next 30 days - as long as everyone is on board for it - is Fall.
As with our last contests, the image MUST be taken during the contest period.
Hope everyone likes it.

Aw, we're past peak here, all our leaves are down already. It's supposed to snow some tonight...ugh

Bummer for you up Wisconsin way...we are almost at peak here, about another week.
Should we allow any fall shot from this fall in on this one as there is such a variable when peak hits?
Just wondering.

Hey Roman,
The great thing about Fall is that it does not have to be foliage. I was figuring there are all sorts of Halloween/Thanksgiving themes that will be coming up that will take out the need for peek foliage. I know I won't get that here in the City...Anyway, I think we should keep it during the challenge period (even though it makes it harder for folks like me as well).

Re: October NWP Photo Forum Challenge - 10/17/11 03:22 PM
I'm assuming by "Fall" you mean Autumn and not the act of letting your body drop to the ground
? Well, foliage changes here in the land of sunshine tend to be far more subtle than in other parts of the world but I'm sure we can come up with something that will reflect that theme. 2012 Calendar shoot is this week with the puppies
. BTW, congrats on winning the Sunrise/Sunset challenge. You got my vote!

Very nice, Marty! I don't have anything yet - but Autumn is just starting to come to NYC.

Hi James...just a question about dates for monthly challenge. Can we submit images taken during the entire month of October, or only from the 17th on?
thanks!

How about one of my favorite subjects, bighorn sheep! October is the pre-rut period when rams get serious about who's in charge and who's just watching . . . Things get real serious later in November.
Cheers! Tony

Hey Tony,
Can't wait to see the big horns!
Marie, technically, the contest started 10/17...which, of course is a problem for me as well. The contest goes through November 16th 2011. I have bubkus since I came back (at least nothing Fall oriented though I have plenty of dogs...).

Ok, no worries, James!
I've gone ahead and deleted my post. Dang, because it was taken on the 10th! LOL!

Nothing says October or Fall to me like the migrating Monarchs that fly through Fire Island National Seashore, heading from east to west on their way to Mexico. In fact, there are so many different species of butterflies migrating through last weekend, it's amazing. In one little 20' x 5' patch of seaside marigold (pictured below) I saw Monarchs, American Coppers, Buckeyes, Cabbage Whites and Orange Sulphers, all at the same time. Amazing. I took this shot last weekend.
For this month's image, I decided to go a bit whimsical.
At least there is
some nature in this shot! Hope its spooky enough! LOL If you are curious, this is my front door, and my hubby did a great job decorating!

Too cool! I have not been to Portland as of yet, but the Japanese Gardens is one of the first places I will go when I do make it there.
Great shot!

Ya know, a guy could really dislike you, Roman
. Lovely subject beautifully captured. I love the "mood" of this image. The soft light from a misty sky. May I ask what time of day this was taken?

LOL...thanks guys!!!
The shot was taken at 10:28 in the morning. The fog was there for about another 1/2 hour before the sun burnt through it.

OK, here's my contribution to the October Challenge "Fall". Here I proudly present Mr. Scarecrow, his daughter, Tiffany Scarecrow and his Scarepuppy, Rascally Red
.
To answer a potential question, no that hat is not PhotoShopped in. This shot was taken in that single nano-second that the hat actually stayed on Reddy's head.
Enjoy,
Jim

Jim,
I can see the thought bubble... "I don't have a good feeling about this. Good thing this is only a one time deal."
Ha, little does he know! Cute shot.

Thank you, Diane. That is my dog. :P Mahkayla. I definitely wanted to make her involved in some way during the challenge, and we lucked out that we were able to go out during the peak of color in our neighborhood (last week)...just in time for the contest. :P
James
PS I am going to do the newsletter this weekend and I will separate all of the images and get the vote going before then.
