February Forum Challenge - Gray

Posted By: James Morrissey

February Forum Challenge - Gray - 01/30/12 02:15 AM

Hey Everyone,

We have a new forum challenge - and it may be a tough one. It is a color them - anything as long as it is 'gray.' The obvious choice would be gray scale, but there are a lot of options...particularly if you are dealing with cloudy or dank conditions. :P

So B&W? I am a little confuzzled.

LOL, it is a theme....B&W is definitely fine, but it can also be subject matter. i.e. perhaps gray drops, heavy cloud cover, you name it.

Ok...um...still confused. What is the topic?

Re: February Forum Challenge - Gray - 02/08/12 05:47 PM

That's not good. The topic is the color 'gray.' I think it leaves room for interpretation for how you want to photograph this. It is both a color and a theme. I think you can see 'gray' also as being 'dreary.' You can also see it as "black and white' or 'gray scale' for when there is little color. Right now, I am looking across at St. John the Divine and it is the very picture of 'gray.' It feels bleak - even as it is beautiful. Now, if only I were somewhere out photographing...

My entry. I love seeing my boxer Jack on gray, and though I've photographed him on it a couple of times in the past I shot another of him this morning so it would qualify for this month's challenge smile.

Hey Kerri,

Thanks for sharing. I like that you entered a doggie! My only gray drop is not big enough for my set, but I am trying to work something out. :P

Since one of my dogs is gray I tried to be more creative than just posting a photo of her. I liked the way the sun was lighting the curve of her head as she rested it across the back of my other dog.

I'm throwing my hat, or kitty into the ring. I hope it's not too late.

My entry may be a little weird but the shot happened as I was going out to try to find a subject for the contest. Walked out the front door with Moxie on our way to the park for a walk and spotted this guy on the front lawn cleaning up some road kill. I title the shot "Black, White and Crimson". I think that adds up to gray.

Keep it up, guys. I am working on mine even as we speak. I have a doggie shot as well, but I am trying for something else as well. It is cool to see all the pet photos this month being entered!

Great set of shots from everyone. Always fun to play the challenge game, it forces you to be creative in a manner you may otherwise have not thought of.
Here is my Gray Themed Landscape, taken while backcountry skiing in the mountains outside of Salt Lake. So after skinning
up to 8600 ft., I had 3 miles of untracked powder. Someone had to do it!!!

Hey Everyone,

The thread is now closed. I will put up a vote list ASAP. Thanks to everyone who participated. I am particularly excited to see all the pets. This was probably the first 'pet dominated' thread yet. LOL, that is not to say that the winner won't be a landscape, just nice to see everyone participating.

Re: February Forum Challenge - Gray - 03/14/12 08:59 PM

Thank you everyone.

I have suggested to James that the next challenge be "Signs of Spring".

Since it is already the 14th, it seems like this ought to run until Easter.

Happy shooting.

Signs of Spring sounds like a great idea...on Saturday, the Canadian Geese arrived on our farm pond and the Sandhill Cranes checked in as well. They like to hang out in the fields. We're having an early spring here with the snow all but gone. I hope to have a chance to submit a shot, if time permits.
