That is interesting. My initial thoughts on the D700 were "No thank you" since I don't really need something "between" a D300 and and a D3.

The sensor cleaning and ability to use the pop up flash in commander mode could potentially sway my thoughts once the camera has proved itself a bit though.

Thanks Jim G.....already saw it....always liked Michael's web site.

I think that the D700 is a nice move forward in the Nikon Lineup....and fills a void that Canon proved there was.

Jim P...I already have a 12MP camera with sensor cleaning....never needeed sensor cleaning much anway. I just want the extra MP for my huge prints....a nice alternitive to a bulky Medium Format setup is all...so still waiting for the D3X.

Yeah, I'm hoping for a D3X as well, but we'll see.

I believe this signals the begining of the end for DX (in nikons terminology) size sensors (all-be-it in a few years).

I was very tempted to buy it, but about half my lenses are DX only and although they will work with the D700 they would only be 6mp. Sensor cleaning not a big deal in my experience, but I like the idea of a (relatively) huge viewfinder!

I have a D200 now, which is great, so I guess I shall still have to upgrade to the D300 instead.

DKirk.....I woulnt be so quick to jump on that wagon of thought. Canon still sells DX exuipment for a reason...it is good equipment up to 12MP....and there are a LOT of people out there with DX lenses.....and the cameras are still less expensive to manufacturer. I will bet that that DX will be around for a long time if not indefinatly.

Don't be so quick to dismiss the FF sensor because of DX lenses. The first thing I did when I got the D3 was disable the auto DX crop and shoot with some DX lenses. You can actually get full frame coverage with them throughout much of the range.
Even when you start loosing the edges of the frame to the smaller image circle, there is more usable picture there than with the auto DX crop.

There are some pictures (with EXIF) that I used to illustrate a discussion about this back then here . . .

The top 5 or 6 shots on this gallery.

I'll try to get more specific later on, but now I'm off to bed.
