Going to Yellowstone!!! - 09/23/13 06:44 PM

Hey Everyone,

I fly out to Yellowstone on Thursday morning. Site updates (i.e. the news, etc) will be sporadic at best until I get back on the 5th of October.

I am very excited. I need a break from the City. I am burnt crispy. :P

Great that you can get away. Hope you have a wonderful time and get in some good opportunities for shooting. Can't wait till I'm able to travel again.

Have fun
Wife and I just got back from there on Saturday.
My step-son who lives in Emigrant got married Thursday up at Chico Hot Springs.
When we left Friday morning the mountains had snow on them.

Awesome, Don. By some chance, did you have any wildlife hot spots? Ie see any Wolves/Griz? I have tons of moose and the other ungulates. I also have some nice griz shots, but they are a sad 10 megapixels and it is time to get some nice new ones. Perhaps a bit further away this time. :P

6 inches of snow on the ground, reported in Jackson as of today! Looks like it is going to be a beautiful week. I hope the clouds are clear of the mountain range by the time I get there.

Only griz we heard about and got a small sighting of was between Norris and Canyon. It was snowing hard and we could barely see it. Didn't get out to Lamar Valley, where we usually see one or two. Also they had closed Dunraven Pass due to the snow.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Thanks, Don. The weather today was not good. Periods of sleet and rain. Sunrise was at the barns and pretty much a waste. This afternoon, I saw a black bear and two moose...but they were not shots I would share. The mountains have been enveloped in clouds. It looks like it may get better. Regardless, am enjoying myself.

Sunrise and sunset were a wash again last night. However, wildlife was nuts. Saw 4 moose and a black bear up in a tree eating some berries. I think. I nailed the bear, but i won't know until i see it on the screen. I somehow screwed up the af on my 5d iii. I need to re-map to the multi controller.

Off to Oxbow bend for sunrise. There is a ton of snow on those mountains, so i hope that we will eventually get a decent sunrise with them, smile

No sunset last night (or sunrise), but i did get to see a grizz chewing on a carcas. I also saw her charge a group of people. Wow. That was a sight to see. They sure can move. I have a shot of her with some ravens trying to take her meal. A bit busy, but cool none the less.

No sunrise this morning. It is pouring out.

We were able to make it in to the parks yesterday. However, last night the saw horses cane out and the roads started to get bolted down. I was speaking with some folks who had been camping in Yellowstone, they were locked down at the camp sites.

We did not bother trying to get into the park today. We photographed the barns this morning, along with everyone else in the Tetons. It was a nice, but not awesome sunrise. I have lots of solid barn shots, so I tried doing panos, etc.

Today, we will try to head out to some of the far towns.

James:

It is a shame that the government shutdown has put a crimp in your Yellowstone trip. I don't have much optimism for a speedy resolution, but hopefully you will be able to find some hidden gems in the many state parks within a few hours drive from Yellowstone.

Thanks, Jim.

We definitely hit the state parks south of town. It was a good trip and the closure did not kill our trip - however, a lot of that is state of mind and the fact that we have been going there for years and have a lot of the iconic shots that look...lol, iconic...helps.

I definitely feel badly about the folks working the concessions, the rangers and other vacationers. Also, the town of Jackson, which depends on the tourism, is going to get killed.

We are visiting friends in Salt Lake right now and then hitting the plane tonight at 11:45 for home. I am not ready to go home yet. smile

Lol, well, I am home! We landed this morning at about 6 AM, picked up the car and drove home. It is always a bit discordant coming home, leaving the mountains to come back to the city. Worse, I am moderately anxious that somehow I picked up a cold yesterday. About 30 mins before getting on the plane, I started sneezing. I did not sleep well in the flight home. I have to sit and go through my images.,.well, just upload them.

I shot a surprising number of photos, but most were spent on a Black bear and a grizzly. I hope that some came out!

More to come. smile
