Mystery chick - only a mother could love

Mystery chick - only a mother could love - 05/02/07 07:18 AM

Thought I'd post this one just for fun. It's spring and all the birds are mating and having chicks. This one is definitely one that only his mother could love.

Do you recognize it? (hint: this is a very common bird)

I have never seen anything like it. LOL.

Hard to even guess! Can't tell how big it is. Coot maybe? (wild guess).

My wild quess is either a Wood Duck or Merganser.

Well over 50 of you took a peek at my mystery chick but only two of you ventured a guess. Dee Dee's "wild"
guess was correct. This rather colorful chick grows up to be one of the drabbest of the water fowl,
the American Coot.

Interesting! They look more like baby buzzards of some kind and that flourescent yellow/orange feathery stuff...you'd think nature would camouflage them a bit more! Great shot of mom and babies.

Yeah, them coots are sure ugly early on. But then they "cute up" a bit.

Hey Jim,

Very nice shot. They certainly do 'cute up.' LOL...that is a new one for me.

Remarkable transformation from frazzled chick to Coot! I would have never guessed what kind of ducklings those are. Fine shots, Glamson.

Dick:)

Yes, sometimes there's no rhyme or reason to nature. Now here is the opposite situation in which a very drab chick turns into a rather ornate Bald Ibis.

Nice punker. We have a lot of them here in germany, but i believe we have another sub species. It is hard to capture them so close.

coots are man as heck-- One coot can chase out a half dozen mallards with a hiss, but they are great for entertainment because they can spend the entire day getting paranoid and chasing any potential intruder down.

Coots are not ducks! They are a type of rail with toed feet that are not webbed.
