A couple of Kestrels - 02/13/08 03:27 PM

Finally got one to sit still close by, shot last Sunday after the Ermine shots. Needless to say, a good day of shooting!

Shot with a Canon 30D and the 400/5.6L, ISO 200 at f/7.1 with +2/3 exposure compensation. Distance was around probably around 10-15 yards if that. Side lit by the rising sun. Shot in RAW and then made a minor level adjustment. Switched to LAB and adjuste curve for A and B channel and then boosted contrast in both A & B. Finally resized for the internet, used smart sharp on the lightness channel, back to RGB and saved. This is my normal "Velvia" color routine that some like and some don't. Level of adjustments vary according to each image.

Jim,
yup, it's got that Velvia look. Very nice. Looks "natural" to me.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for sharing your post processing technique. I was thinking that the birds seem so very nicely saturated and rich. I wish I could spend a half hour of computer time behind folks who can really beef up the colors in a non-damaging way to the photograph.
