Pleasant Surprise

Pleasant Surprise - 10/16/09 10:32 AM

My previous attempts at photographing Lower North Falls in Silver Falls State Park never quite produced the look I wanted the water to have. I decided to try an extra long exposure (20 seconds). It still didn't turn out the way I wanted it too, and the long exposure produced a lot of noise in the trees and plants, but it did produce a really neat swirl as the creek bends just after the falls.

Hey Tyler,

I agree about the swirl. Why would the long exposure create noise in the branches? It was only 20 seconds...

By noise, I meant wind blowing the branches and bushes and making them blurry. My normal waterfall shots are anywhere from 2 seconds to 1/8 of a second. With those shutter speeds, I can sneak the shots between breezes. At 20 seconds I'm not sure there is any way around it.

Tyler,
I know what you mean, but in this image at this size, the "noise" in the foliage is not distracting at all. Sometimes, if there is to much detail in the leaves that is distracting and have to brush it with the blur tool.

I like the swirl and the long exposure,,funny though, the falling water doesn't look like it has a 20 sec exposure, not sure why. I do a lot of water falls in S. Oregon and have never run across this before,, I need to get back up to Silver Falls park, just never seen to get the time. DAve

Ya, I don't really know what to do with this waterfall. I can never get a nice wisp, which I previously thought was it just needed longer shutter speed. If 20 seconds doesn't do it, I don't know what will. It also doesn't have the power/flow rate to get a nice freeze shot, which I've also tried.

Interesting picture...like Dave, I see the same contradiction....I see the falls that looks like about 1/6 - to 1/4 of a second, and the swirl that probably needed all of the 20 seconds to catch.

Intresting
