The Fall Foliage Thread

The Fall Foliage Thread - 10/07/10 01:30 PM

Hey Everyone,

Fall was beautiful in Wyoming this year...perhaps the best I have seen in years (and longer in duration). This is one that I took with the Leica M9 (one of my favorites actually of the entire trip). Anyone else care to join with a photo or two??

Still not 100% here yet. Opal Creek and The Gorge are my color destinations this year.

Beautiful James!

I can't wait to see your Opal Creek, Roman. It is on my wish list, to come out and visit.

We had some beautiful Maple color early, but last week's rain and winds stripped all the leaves. In a week or two we may see the oaks turning red.

Vivid color James!

Nice effect with the added blur Penny.

Thank you Dave, it was a rather unremarkable photo. I was bored and just had to get out. This was taken in a break in the rain.

Hey Marty,

Beautiful photograph - really quite nice. When I first saw the livestock, I thought they were snow. :P

Lovely Marty. I like the bright cheerful yellow. What trees are those? Aspen? Birch?
Posted By: Marty Everhard

Re: High Country-Utah - 10/12/10 01:39 AM

Thank's for the comments. They are Aspens, gold for two weeks a year. A really beautiful place I have found there.
I shoot it every year. It is the dog, in the middle shot, to me makes the picture.
James, I will get with you on the lightroom thread, when I get a few minutes. When will you be parting with your Jellystone shots?

Re: High Country-Utah - 10/12/10 01:27 PM

Hey Marty,

Thanks. I am always open to hear more. Right now I am on the 30 day evaluation. I will plunk down the 200 bucks at the end of the 30 days. The one thing I will say is how easy I find the workflow. BTW, I put together a 6 shot pano of Mount Moran that is rather quite breath-taking. Sharp all the way through and quite beautiful. LOL, just another Mount Moran photo. :P

Anyway, I am currently putting together 3 articles. The first two are Oly and Leica field reviews. The Leica is nearly finished - I just have to pick out the photos and publish. The Olympus I am still working on. The last article will be a joint piece with my wife. Sadly, I am afraid that everyone here is going to be REALLY sick of Yellowstone and Grand Teton in the Fall by the time I am finished. :P

These are excellent results.
I'm still not sure why you are still shooting with Velvia. I have found that todays digital SLR's are remarkable as good and manipulativable (is that a word?) Sure, you are used to using your media and are comfortable with it. But have you tried the newer digital SLR's?

Re: The Fall Foliage Thread - 10/16/10 02:30 PM

Here in Florida, the change in seasons tends to be a bit more subtle than in the rest of the country and while Fall Foliage is thought of as a burst of color before a time where Mother Nature takes a rest, in Florida, it is a time of renewal, rebirth and regeneration. Mother Nature may vacation here but she never rests . So, while I was walking the Nature Trail yesterday on a magnificent low-80's Fall day, I tried to capture the essence of Fall in Florida. Having spend most of my life in New England, I can appreciate all that color. But I can also appreciate the differences we find here.

We have a wide variety of Fall flowers.

Including tiny ones hiding in a field of Goldenrod.

Scenes of renewal with flowers draped across the charred trunks of pine trees burned from the last lightning strike.

And being visited by moths to carry their seeds throughout the wetland.

White seedpods in the midst of a sea of gold and green.

And a spider's lair in the middle of the swamp.

We have our change of season here. But it whispers it's changes instead of shouting. You have to look closely but what you find is worth the effort.

Lovely photos Jim, I really like that soft pastel yellow in #3.

jadlh,

Lovely reflections! I love the tree in #3, I just wish there was more of the trunk visible.

I did answer to you for this question in a private message, because I'm sure, if I post it here, it would be generate an argument. (again)

Here I post just one part of my answer:

- Because I can!

All the photos are original and full frame (no croping, no stiching), and no digital enhancement on them.

Hey James... here's a couple more from the Tetons in September. Where did you shoot the image you posted??? I'm hoping it wasn't in the northern part of the park.....

Thanks for looking.

Re: The Fall Foliage Thread - 10/27/10 11:23 AM

Hey Karl,

No. I did not make it North of Canyon this trip. We stayed in Jackson the entire week and mostly stayed in the Tetons. We hit Sylvan Lake once on the East Side, the Geyser Basin twice, and West Yellowstone twice.

Love the second one... the moody sky and the calm water set this up for a wonderful image.
Posted By: SJGordon

Re: The Fall Foliage Thread - 11/03/10 03:17 PM

Thanks. The second one was taken mid-morning about 8:45 AM just as the sky was starting to clear and early morning rain showers were finishing. The break in the clouds let that sweet morning light in to just light up the far shore of the lake as I walked up.

Re: The Fall Foliage Thread - 11/04/10 12:27 PM

I agree. That 2nd one os really cool. The photos i tend to like best have dark backgrounds and lit foregrounds.

We didn't have much color here in Southern Ohio this year it was too dry. I managed to capture this early morning light and fog, which turned out to be one of my best for the year.
