Hey Edward!

Glad to see you around. Nice shots. The only nitpick is that I cannot see the eyes at all. I am wondering if a slight dodge in PS around the eyes might be helpful?

nice capture. Those things are about the most spooky birds I've ever tried to photograph, plus, they dont sit still, in the same place for long. I find them harder than stalking herrons in the wideopen west. If you've not tried that, give it a try, it's not like shooting them in Ding, or Blackwater, or Chechotegue, or those eastern locations where you can almost reach out the rig and grab them. I love the king fisher, and herrons and when I lived back east I could not believe how many birds there were along the coast durring the winter. . .

Where did you photograph him? They look more blue than the ones out here in Montana. . .

Thanks for posting, I like to see them king fishers for sure!

Ed,
Nice shots of a beautiful bird. I agree with James, a little more light in the eye and a catch light would help. Post processing can help there. That is a sharp bird.

Thanks James. Yeah, there's no light from the right hand side when I took the shots. Guess I'd need to PS it a bit

Thank you Tony. I took the shots when I travelled to Cairns, Australia last Christmas. Yeah, I was able to take 4 or 5 shots before it flew away :P This was the first time I saw such a nice beautiful bird in blue.

The other tool that I like to use, when not using dodge/burn, is shadow/highlights. It is one of the greatest enhancements in Photoshop CS (and even made the upgrade wortwhile from 7).

Hi Edward

Looks to me like you have captured the "Forest Kingfisher". They are striking little birds. We just got back from Fraser Island in SE Queensland and got to see Sacred, Azure and Forest Kingfishers in the wild. I didn't succeed in getting a good picture of the Forest K. As someone else mentioned, they are rather spooky. But it was exciting to see one. They are a beautiful flash of blue when they fly.

Is Birdworld a zoo in Cairns? I have not been as high up as Cairns.

Australia has some lovely birds! Hope you had a great trip.

I liked your International cat shots Edward, the 'ships cat' in Cairns looks like a little tough guy.
