East Quoddy Lighthouse - Canada

East Quoddy Lighthouse - Canada - 08/03/11 01:22 PM

Hey Everyone,

This is the East Quoddy Lighthouse, located on the edge of Campobello Island. As I understand it, it is the 'lesser photographed' lighthouse, but IMO, the more magnificent one. It is technically on its own island that is reachable only by walking across the coast at low tide. At high tide, there is a full blown ocean around it. :P It is a really cool place to photograph, and we had the great opportunity to see a humpback whale right off of the coast (I believe it was a humpback based upon the fluke and size...Minkes also frequent the area).

Hope everyone likes!

James

It's lovely James! How was the land? Was it squishy at low tide or reasonably sturdy? Speaking of stink, was it stinky?

Thanks, PJ! I was not sure if people were just being polite as I noticed the thread got a bunch of hits, but no comments.

Anyway, about the terrain - the ground was solid. You are walking over some slick rock with a lot of seaweed for about 30 or 40 feet. The ground is typical sea bottom and is solid when you cross that area. As to the stink - no, it was not smelly at all. The area that is visible at low-tide (at least the width) was perhaps no more than 20 feet across. When Chanthee and I crossed, it was closer to about 10 feet across before hitting the ocean. When we made the passage, we were definitely a bit concerned about getting stuck there - or falling on the rocks as we traversed the area.

Actually it is quite nice James. I like the composition.

Thank you, Jim! My one gripe is perhaps just a bit too much of the foreground ridge. Otherwise, I was pretty satisfied with it.

I agree James. It's a nice scene, but I would crop it so that only a small sliver of the foreground ridge shows. That seems to really keep the focus on the lighthouse and its immediate relation to the sea.

Good work!

Hey James, I like the foreground. It gives the full color of the terrain. The rust color below and through the rock outcrop, pulls in the orange in the deck at the base of the storage units as well as the light in the lighthouse. To me the focus is the full palette of color in the scene. I'm drawn as much to the terrain as I am to the lighthouse. I am also drawn to the pinkish lavender light upon the clouds above the nebulous horizon. It's as if light cast by the lighthouse and that of God have blended.

From your perspective, the red cross on the side of the lighthouse looks more like a religious cross signaling safety and sanctuary. I'm not a particularly religious man, but I want to "attend service" on Campobello Island.

Thanks for sharing.
