Wild Horses: One of My Favorite Subjects

Wild Horses: One of My Favorite Subjects - 10/30/11 10:08 PM

As a new member I thought I might post a selection of some of my wild horse photos taken this year. I'm blessed living near two of North Carolina's wild horse herds - Shackleford Banks and the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve. In addition to these two herds there are wild horses on the northern end of the Outer Banks at Corova and also a small, captive herd on Oakracoke island. The Rachel Carson Reserve is a short drive plus a very short kayak paddle from home. Reaching Shackleford involves a longer drive plus a 15 minute boat ride. Anyway, hope you enjoy the photos.

Bob,

All I can say is AMAZING. I especially like the composition of the first image.

Thank you for sharing. A nice addition to the forum.

Hey Bob,

That's great. Very nice shots. I pretty much like them all. I had not realized that there were wild herds in the Carolinas proper.

Thanks James. I think more people are unaware of the wild mustangs of the east coast than are aware of them. There are horses living wild off the coast of Maryland/Virgina and Georgia as well. At one time all of the Outer Banks held horses and have done so for almost 500 years. In fact those horses were isolated enough to be recognized as a pure breed - the Banker Horse. As you can see in the thrid photo, the horses seem to be getting fairly used to my visit... maybe a little too use to them! I thought that mare was going to climb onboard and I was doing a bit of back paddling right after that shot was taken. wink
