Mama Bear with Two Cubs

Mama Bear with Two Cubs - 11/03/12 09:17 PM

In July/August of this year, Petra and I returned to Alaska . . . this time without such unrealistic expectations. We made a conscious decision not to run about willy-nilly in hopes of spotting bears and eagles. This trip, our goal was to just relax and enjoy the experience. So naturally, on this trip we were blessed with a couple of bear and several eagle sightings.

I was walking in the rain along a well travelled path leading from a parking lot down to a view of Mendenhall Glacier when I, along with several dozen other tourists, spotted this Black Bear sow with two cubs perched high up in a tree. She was making her way up and down the tree retrieving salmon for her young. Although we could not get a glimpse of her out of the tree, I was able to snag some shots, mostly of the cubs. Since I was shooting up into the rain, many of my exposures are marred by rain drops on my lens. Fortunately, it was a weather sealed lens.

Great shots, especially given the weather conditions. Very cool, Jim.
