The nearest tree to the prairie dog colony I have been watching is about 30 yards away from the colony. I parked near the tree and waited for a hawk to show up. 2 hours latter he did show up for a couple of minutes.

I suppose so. :P I was thinking of Meerkats (which I realize are not related) and of their call system, which as I understand it is pretty sophisticated.
