this is the lens i'm leaning towards. i'm scouting ebay & another photo forum to see if i can get a nice copy used.

how fast is the focus?

i love my 70-200. i rented it a couple times last year for some indoor shows and the pictures were nice. still need to tweak my settings, but now that i have it to practice, i can't wait to see if i can do better. i'm testing it out for the first time at a show this sunday. i'll post some photos if anyone wants to see them.

I think this lens is ideal. It's as sharp as necessary stopped down; it's compact and easy to carry; it has IS which is a real benefit when you're shooting at 135mm (which is really 216mm on a crop body). And it's affordable.

BTW, how do you like the70-200?

focus is typical USM -- fast and silent. I've used the 17-55 and the 24-105L lenses and, from the reviews, I expected this lens to be visibly inferior. But it's not. And the color quality is quite nice which most folks don't pay attention to.

As for the 70-200, I've been shooting the 70-200 F2.8L IS for the past week and it's awesome. Here's a shot I took with it on the Florida Circuit last week.



I love it when you can catch them fully-airborne!

Enjoy the 70-200. And I think you'll like the 28-135 a lot.

Heck, right now you can get a U.S. Warranty 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens for $929 from Adorama and there is some sort of a rebat on top of that! Why buy used?

If you can afford it and if you think that you will stay with the 1.6x format; the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens is a great piece of glass. I love it in combination with my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens. Those two lenses fit together very well. I never notice that I am missing the 55-70mm focal range.

I would think the 70-200 would be perfect for portraits, head shots, 3/4 shots. Most portraits are done at double the normal focal length so the 70-200 is right in that range. It is also one of the best sharpest lenses manufactured by Canon.

I shot a couple of Sheltie Specialties over the weekend and wanted to share both the formals and the portrait session where I used the 28-135 IS.

For the formal, I used a single Alien Bee 400 slightly forward of the dog and 10 feet away bounced off of a silver umbrella and shot manual exposure at F8 and 1/200 sec. Shot RAW, processed for basic exposure and pre-sharpened only in Photokit Sharpener.



The portrait was taken outside, in open shade, at Aperture Priority at F5.6 to diffuse the background. Again, original in RAW, adjusted for brightness only, pre-sharpened in Photokit Sharpener.



I'm satisfied with both the sharpness of the lens stopped down and the bokeh opened up. And the color is typical Canon: warm and smooth.

Thought you'd like to see these.
