No, but you make a very good point. I will ask them. I would swear that they were on Lowepro's site 18 or so months ago. But, that could be my adled mind too

Julie,
The person I know at LowePro is checking into it. They have to check with their marketing department. I should know something sometime tomorrow and will post what I find out.

No one gave the link to think tank, I think they have a great line of products even beyond the roller bags. . .

My thoughts on the political spin. I think as photographers we have to be very careful about taking the moral high ground. All of our gear is made over seas and much of it in repressive nations like china.

Of course youre entitled to your views and you should always use your buying power to send a message, but keep in mind that a lot of what we use and buy is made in countries that have little to NO worker support, no child labor laws, countries like, Burma, Cuba, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, Belarus, China, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Zimbabwe the territory of Western Sahara is also included in this group.

So, should we boycott the Olympics too?

My point here is that we do have choices, but if a moral stand is what you want to make to tell the world that you dont support animal activists, why not take it a step further and do what you cant to boycott repressive nations and stop buying photography equipment, calendars, books, coffee, dimonds, the list goes on and on. . .

My contact at LowePro checked with the marketing department and to the best of LowePro's knowledge, they are NOT affiliated with PETA.

Tony, not all packs are made overseas. LoweAlpine makes packs for the military and for the packs to be made for the military, they have to be made in the USA.

Hey dave, I never said they were, i did however suggest that the moral high ground boycotts can be a slippery slope. Youre a nikon shooter, where was all your gear made, how about your computer hard drive and you monitor, or maybe your compact flash card?

The point is if a person is going to boycott an outfit because they dont like what it does, consider looking a little deeper and we then find that we live in a complex world and much of what we now enjoy, including our life style is at least in part a result of oppression and repressive nations. . .

Now, I'm not trying to start a fight with you, but not all military packs are made in the USA. I'm affiliated with a specialty tactical pack company (I'm a consultant and their photographer) and we also make rifle stocks. many of the packs are designed and sold to the US military special forces units as well as to local swat teams, the packs are stitched in china . . . .

Julie was doing the boycotting of LowePro and I just questioned if her facts were accurate which it turns out they weren't accurate.

If a pack is bought through local purchase, then you are correct. But if it is bought through normal military channels (GSA with a NSN#) then it has to be Berry Amendment compliant which require the packs to be made in the USA or a qualified country which the materials are American made and 50% of the buckles are American made.

You weren't fighting with me, just talking about something different.

thanks dave, I was not accusing you of NOT understanding boycotting, but I did think the issues were interesting, and I always enjoy a good political debate. . . thanks for the clarification!
