A decade of chasing tarpon and snook through Florida Bay's teal waters has taught Rob Clift the tricks to navigating this 600-square-mile lagoon off the southern tip of Florida where the Everglades bleed into the ocean. The bay is so shallow that a strong northeast wind in a low tide can virtually drain it, so judging depth is the key. Clift, a former guide, reads the surface for clues: mangrove seedlings, wading birds, subtle changes in color.
