That is an interesting comparison! Glad to see WHCC came in second. I have not used or heard of HH color lab, but, what I like most about WHCC is their customer service. I also love their print fufillment which makes my life way easier

I have always been pleased with my prints from them and you'd really have to give me a reason to stop using them. All local clients pick up at the studio, but, its usually due to being larger prints

Diana,
using a lab for prints and fulfillment has one additional advantage: someone to blame . From every show I shoot, I'll get one or two people who, in an effort to get an additional print for free, will tell me the print they received from the lab wasn't any good: color was off, too light, too dark, etc. So I tell them to send me the print and I'll make sure the lab corrects the problem and sends them a reprint right away. Curiously, I never get the print from those folks and the "problem" miraculously goes away.

BTW, I seed myself on every 3rd order and receive a print to check print quality so I have a pretty good idea what the clients are receiving.

Ah yes, they are the same ones who carry the dead cockroach in their pocket when they go out to eat. When they've had their fill they put the cockroach to work.

That test is interesting for sure. I wonder if they had ICC profiles for soft-proofing each lab.

My experience with the local Costco stores has been OK as far as the quality of the actual printing, but their handling of the prints after the fact leaves much to be desired. Lots of crooked cuts, bent corners and such.

It would be interesting to see the new MPIX pro in the mix now too.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I do print my own on-site when the event makes it convenient. I use a Shinko printer that is a beast in terms of portability, but it is rock solid and reliable.

How interesting about H&H. They were very select as to who they took on. Two friends of mine who did a great deal of printing with them, switched to ACI. I have been pleased with ACI but really have loved the mounting and finishing of Burrell, and they are not listed.
Thanks for posting this Preston.

Do you know why your friends quit using H&H? They certainly got good marks. I checked out their webpage and see that there is an "account application". Does this mean they want to cater to high-end photographers and have a dollar or volume minimum or something?

I think I'm going to try out several different services and do my own little survey.

Thanks everyone for your input on services and printers.

Diana,
a number of labs require an application -- White House does too. I believe it's because they are commercial labs and want to be sure the folks using their services will provide the volume necessary to make the discounted prices profitable and will also be able to provide good files to print. With services like EZ Prints for example, they are willing to deal with the onesy-twosy orders. The major pro labs are looking for folks with wedding or event volumes or who will be ordering high-end products like books and large prints.

In the case of WHCC the application gets a process started for you to send them a file or two and they send you back a few free prints in order to ensure that you are happy with the color. They encourage embedded profiles.

The application process also keeps your customers from doing a quick look up of your print costs.

They used them for many years and said the problems were too many and often. When I see them next month I will see if they are still happy with ACI. H&H turned me down when I was first starting out. They did not say why but then why should they? My guess was that you are correct.
