I used to enjoy camping a lot. I would like to start doing it again. The problem is always time. We have some beautiful spaces in New England that are great from early summer to late fall. Lots of wildlife and beautiful scenery.

I also do not see the need for an additional forum for camping or outdoor related subjects. I see the connection though.

I had to chuckle about the Kombi van (PossumCorner). I am often teasing my other half saying that we need to get a Kombi and travel Oz. Would just love to do something like that.

We go "pseudo" camping some weekends: pack a mattress, comforters, snacks, laptops, cameras and doggy comes too. All sleep in the back of the car (ute/canopy). I love experiencing more of the great outdoors this way, we all enjoy it. I am fortunate to have an easy going, no frills kind of guy. He loves driving, I love taking pictures. We either find a secluded spot and camp for free or use a caravan (rv) park or campground if they are dog friendly.

Normally we don't plan too much in advance, just play it
by ear. But car camping is so handy when you want to move on at a moment's notice to a promising location without
wasting time setting up/dismantling tents.

There are some National Parks here and especially arid mallee areas of Australia that I would love
to visit (for bird photography), having a dog could present a challenge as many NPs wont allow dogs. Some State forests and regional parks allow dogs so I have a bit of research ahead of me. Have some books so need to read up. Am looking forward to our next adventure.

In 5 hours, I leave to go photograph Flyball, then on to Denali National Park for some Nature photography, then on to Fairbanks to photograph Dog Agility and to Creamer's Dairy to photograph more Nature, then I go back home to photograph more Dog Agility, then I put my truck on the ferry and get taken to Wrangell-Elias National Park (largest National Park in the USA)to photograph more Nature. I will be camping for the next month and will be home for only 3 days of that month. I will be meeting up with David Cardinal of Digital Pro fame and the business partner of Moose Peterson. I am also going to meet David Ryan of Wyoming. Exciting month of photography for me. See you in a month!!!

I had a sudden change of plans. I postponed my Denali trip due to some bad weather we had at the Fly Ball Tournament. I stayed over on Sunday to get enough photographs to give people a selection. I will average 3000 - 4000 Dog Agility photos in a weekend and only had 1411 photos on the Fly Ball. I will go to Denali later this summer.

That is a fairly impressive number of shots. What percentage do you think are usable?

James

Hi everybody,

sorry to pop in here with a question out of nowhere, but I've always wondered if sleeping in my car was allowed in US and Canadian National Parks. I'm from Holland and the rules and regulations are different here so that's why I ask.

I average about 85 - 90% usable.

here in the great ole USA you can sleep in whatever you want, a box if you like!

The issues here are the places you choose to park it. you need to pay in most national and state parks. But, out west in the USA, there lots of public land and lots of pull offs along the road where you can sleep. You are limited to 14 days on most public lands, and then you have to move. . .

Not sure about cananda, i camp there a lot, and my assumtion is that they will let you sleep in your car too, but similar rules apply as the one's I just described.. .

Good luck and come on out, you will love the freedom, so long as the current republican party does not get away with stripping more and more of it!

Thanks Tony for answering my question, this certainly opens up a lot of great possibilities. I'll keep this in mind when I'm planning my next trip, those motel costs can add up pretty fast on a one month visit...
