I wanted a small camera to take to Disney on our vacation so I opted for the D3100.

Wow, it's tiny and feels totally foreign in my hands compared to the full body D3S & D3 I'm accustomed to.

I haven't read the manual yet, but I've been playing around with it.

Here's a test using the 70-200 f/2.8.

I'll probably have a 50mm and a 70-300 for the trip unless I have a LOT of sales between now and then. Then I may get the new 28-300.

Hey Jim,

Do you find the small D3100 that more compact than your bigger SLRS? I have also been looking for a 'small camera' myself. I have been debating purchasing a Micro 4/3 digital camera. It would mean some new lenses, but I really like how compact the small cameras are.

James

Hi James,

Sorry I just go to this (Hello from Disney!). The D3100 is absolutely more compact. I call it a P&S on steroids.

I'm using the 70-300 and the 24-70 on this trip, and the lenses take up the room, not the camera. I choose at the start of each day which lens I want to use that day, but with the 28-300, that choice would be unnecessary for the way I'm using the camera.

I think the perfect combination for a "pocket camera" would be the D3100 and the new 28-300. I've played with the lens some, but couldn't justify it ahead of this trip.

If I keep the camera (and probably even if I don't) I'll eventually add the 28-300 as a walk about lens.
