Just got home from Schutzhund training with my dog, I took Tony's advice and am trying to get closer in camera crop, interaction type shots. I went out on the field to get closer, these are with the 300 2.8. Still not getting quite what I envision but it's good practice.

This is an "artsy" one...although I am never sure if they are really artsy or if they just didn't turn out...LOL.

Thanks Julie.
Oops I did sound misleading, sorry, no that is a Dutch Shepherd, not mine. Here is my dog LOL, if we pass in the June trial she'll be the first dachshund in this area to get a Schutzhund title, we are trying to find out how many doxies have gotten Sch. titles if any in the US. This is actually a joke photo, the decoy has a treat in his hand...Hallie is too sweet to be a protection dawg, the title we are going for is all obedience stuff. She is an awesome little worker though we have AKC obedience titles and have just started tracking.

This one is called "Find Hallie"

I am taking it that Schutzhund training is a form of protection training? I find the dachshund photographs to be very cute - particularly considering the different composition as compared to a German Shepherd.

James,
Schutzhund is, indeed, protection training and it incorporates a lot of basic obedience training in addition to the bite work. Most of the dogs that do Schutzhund are German Shepherds, Rotties, Malinois and dogs that you would normally associate with police work.

The key to Schutzhund is the release: all dogs can bite but a well-trained Schutzhund dog will always release on command. If properly trained, it is a sport and the dogs actually enjoy the "play" with the agitator and the sleeve is thought of as a "toy".

Although I own Rotties, I don't work in Schutzhund. I do, however, respect the dogs and people that do it well and I've shot a bunch of Schutzhund trials. In my household, my Golden, Crash, is the only dog with the temperament to actually get a Schutzhund title. Dee Dee, can you imagine a Schutzhund III Golden?

Jim

Nice photos!

I do Schutzhund with my ACDs :-) My male that I sadly retired last month due to age got his SchH A and I finally got my act together and got him tracking but at 7.5 I did not want him having to do the wall. I started him late in the sport so I am working with his nephew now and hope to go all the way with him.

Here are some of the photos that others have taken of my dogs :-) They are not necessarily "photographically" good but when its my dog, I don't really care :-p

Who do you train with in WA state? In May I am going to another Michael Ellis seminar, this time with my new puppy. I love Michael Ellis' training style so it should be a blast!

Thanks James, we were laughing at the set up because Hallie is the sweetest, most gentle little thing (with a great sense of humor) and would never nip much less bite anyone. This day was the decoys 50th birthday so everyone was razzing him that he's old now and can only handle dachshunds.

LOL Jim, that would be one for the books, a SCH III golden!

Those are GREAT shots Ingrid! Beautiful dogs! Very cool you are doing the sport with cattle dogs, it's fun to see different breeds. I train with the Cascade Schutzhund Club near Olympia. I'd love to hear how you like the seminar.

This is a little off topic, but how much does this sort of training for a dog cost?

James

Do you mean for you to learn to train the dog or to get the dog trained? I don't know the norm but to send a dog with a good trainer around here (they keep the dog and train it) it runs around $400 a month. But most people train their own dogs, in that case you would need to take lessons which can run from around $35 or more an hour for privates, or $10 or so per hour for group lessons. I don't know anyone around here that does group lessons in Schutzhund though, I have trained and shown my dogs in obedience for over 20 years (gads I feel old! ) so mainly just needed to learn the Schutzhund exercises which I did by training with friends which didn't cost anything...so basically the most common way for someone starting out would be to join a club, get some private lessons and in between get together to practice with other club members.

(RUN Mahkayla, Dad has plans for you LOL!)
